Largemouth bass
Species card

Largemouth bass
PREDATOR
Name and family
Scientific name Micropterus salmoides
It belongs to the sunfish family (Centrarchidae) and is the species behind most bass fishing competitions in the world.
What makes it special
The classic ambush predator of weeds, wood and docks. The mouth reaches back past the eye. It is native to North America and was introduced in Europe more than a century ago.
It ambushes prey from cover, which is why anglers aim casts at weeds, logs and shadows. Surface lures such as frogs work best in warm weather.
Where it lives
Warm, calm waters with cover: lakes, ponds, slow rivers and canals. In Italy it lives in many lakes.
What it eats
Fish, crayfish and frogs.
Before you fish
Fishing rules change by country, state and season. Check them before you fish.
